Standing on hard concrete floors up to 8 hours a day, 5 days a week can be a pain, literally. There are well documented studies of the effects of standing on hard concrete floors for long periods and one of the most common pains associated with standing, that is difficult to treat, is heel pain (plantar fasciitis).

If you are aware of anyone suffering with heel and foot pain, along with pain relief there are some simple stretching exercises that can significantly relieve the symptoms, that involve flexing the toes of the affected foot, in either a standing or sitting position.

Another exercise is to take a standard food can (beans/ tomatoes/ soup; whatever is to hand), and while sitting, remove shoes and roll the can backwards and forwards across the sole of the foot, from heel to toe. This exercise is great to do whilst sitting or relaxing. The contents of the tin are unaffected, and the rolling motion helps to relieve the symptoms of plantar fasciitis.
